How to Study EcoS

24.03.2021

Since March 2020, teaching has been possible only remotely, and direct contact between our students and the EcoS staff has only been possible via video. We thus think it might be useful to remind you of some basic administrative features of “how to study EcoS”.

These are not perfect conditions for effective communication, to say the least. Nonetheless, we have tried hard to make this bullet-proof, but please note that in case of doubt, the wording of the official curriculum as published in the “Mitteilungsblatt” of the University of Vienna counts (you will find this and other useful links on our EcoS Website).

  • Module M1 (language): You need to acquire 30 ECTS. This is done by attending language courses at the SPL 15 (East Asian Studies). The specific options vary depending on which language you have chosen, so please check the details for Chinese, Japanese and Korean.
  • Module M2 (economy): You need 15 ECTS in total. 7 ECTS are given for the SE Economic Systems in East Asia, 4 ECTS for the UE Economic Systems in East Asia, and 4 ECTS for the VU Economic Development in East Asia (7+4+4=15). If you attended Economic Development in East Asia as a seminar (SE) before October 2020, you got 8 ECTS for that SE (7+8=15) and thus do not have to attend the UE (although we would still recommend it; it can then be credited for M4, see below). Please note that the three courses mentioned in this paragraph are offered annually, either in the winter term or in the summer term.
  • Module M3 (politics): You need 15 ECTS in total. 7 ECTS are given for the SE Political Systems in East Asia, 4 ECTS for the UE Political Systems in East Asia, and 4 ECTS for the VU International Relations in East Asia (7+4+4=15). If you attended International Relations in East Asia as a seminar (SE) before October 2020, you got 8 ECTS for that SE (7+8=15) and thus do not have to attend the UE (although we would still recommend it; it can then be credited for M4, see below). Please note that the three courses mentioned in this paragraph are offered annually, either in the winter term or in the summer term.
  • Module M4 (society): You need 20 ECTS in total. These can be acquired by attending various VUs as offered by EcoS. You can either acquire all 20 ECTS by attending EcoS VUs, or 16 ECTS from EcoS VUs and 4 ECTS from another course offered at the SPL 15. Please get in touch with EcoS staff or the SPL before attending such a course to make sure it can indeed be credited in the way you plan. We typically offer at least two M4 courses each semester.
  • Module M5 (MA): You need 10 ECTS in total, plus the MA thesis (25 ECTS) and the MA exam/defense (5 ECTS). The 10 ECTS come from the SE “Research Seminar and Monitoring Class for the Master's and PhD Thesis“. This SE is offered every semester (twice a year).

In case of doubt, lack of clarity, problems, contradictory information, errors etc.: Please get in touch with a member of the EcoS staff as quickly as possible. We have so far been able to resolve even the most complex issues in the interest of our students, as long as we were aware of them early enough.

For questions of substitution or recognition of courses, please contact the study service support (SSS) (stefanie-yu[at]univie.ac.at).

The same applies to studying abroad: If you plan to spend a semester elsewhere, make sure to get a written confirmation from the Study Program Directorate, aka SPL (agnes.schick-chen[at]univie.ac.at) confirming that the courses you intend to take can be recognized for the EcoS program. Do so BEFORE you actually go abroad and enroll in courses there. [In case of the Non-EU exchange scholarship this a program requirement anyway; please also refer to the “Study Abroad” section of the SSS Website for information on related questions.]
