Event Invitation - Hackers and Social Networks: How North Koreans are accessing Foreign Information

20.04.2022

On April 27, Dr. Steven Denney and Mr. Peter Ward will present findings and discuss implications from a recently completed research project on information use and dissemination in North Korea, at the event "Hackers and Social Networks: How North Koreans Are Accessing Foreign Information."

The event, hosted by the Stimson Center in Washington DC, will take place on April 27 from 3:00PM - 4:30PM CET (9:00AM - 10:30AM EDT). Those interested in the topic specifically or information use in authoritarian regimes generally are encouraged to attend. Mr. Martyn Williams, an analyst for the Stimson Center and 38North, will also introduce a new report that covers citizen demands for information in North Korea.

You may RSVP via the event page at the following: link.

The background for the event, as per Stimson's announcement, reads as follows:

"Join us for a discussion highlighting the work of two reports on North Korean information controls in North Korea. Martyn Williams will launch a new report that details the cat and mouse game played between the North Korean government and citizens over illicit consumption of information, and recent evidence of a more aggressive pushback by some citizens that appears to have worried the government. Peter Ward and Steven Denney will discuss their recently published report, based on interviews with over 300 escapees, about how foreign information is used and disseminated in North Korea and how the state’s information controls adapt accordingly."
